Retro FriDAYS: The Proposal

For a show centered around the love lives in Salem, it only makes sense that marriage (or at least a stab at it) would be part and parcel. This week’s Retro FriDAYS takes a look at hopeful men, and sometimes apprehensive women.

Roman gets down on one knee for a woman used to getting on both of hers.

Seeing Jack makes me sad. So much more they could have done bringing him back.

For all the LUMI lovers

And a ride into the sunset

E.J. has gotten pretty good at this. Here’s highlights.

This feels like ancient history, even though it was earlier this year. Also a reminder of how all over the place writing has been this year.

Oh, and this

And in between there was this

We’ll all pretend this never happened

Nooooo! (plus a little yes): Staff Changes (Spoiler Alert!)

So with the new writers come a large blood bath round of cuts, as reported by Soap Opera Digest. According to the SOD article, the changes are only the beginning.

I’ll rank the actors we are losing from saddest about to don’t really care:
Matthew Ashford as Jack!!

Christie Clark as Carrie

Who me?

Patrick Muldoon as Austin

And lastly and leastly, Sarah Joy Brown as Madison

No, you're fired!

I am not very surprised to see this news, although I am surprised to see Matthew/Jack’s name on the chopping block. It seems they never really found a rhythm for Jack. I feel like Austin and Carrie have served their purpose and I’m not really that interested in what happens next for them. And Madison… well, smell ya later.

Days has a huge cast, and in the era of disappearing soaps, it makes sense that they would slim things down a bit. But that doesn’t mean I have to like it.

Carrie v. Sami has me questioning my sanity

So last night as my husband and I were watching Carrie & Sami argue, we disagreed on who to root for. Generally if Sami is involved, I am on the other side of the argument. But Carrie’s self righteousness is also suuuuper annoying. Last night, I was on team Carrie.

Now that everything is out in the open, here’s how I see it:
- Rafe never would have been disconnected from Sami and seeking some other comfort if Sami hadn’t cheated, lied about it, and felt guilty.
- Carrie & Rafe haven’t slept together, they’ve only kissed.
- Sami did a lot more of much more terrible things to Carrie, and Carrie has managed to forgive her.
- Sami & Rafe’s marriage is over because of EJ & Sami, not because of Carrie.

Calling me out for the stuff I did? Boooooooooooooooring.

Here’s how my husband sees it:
- You don’t go around kissing your sister’s husband.

Hey, we haven't even done it yet!

It’s a fair point. That was bad. But I just can’t stand Sami trying to make this about Carrie and not taking any real responsibility. She seems more upset that her sister kissed her husband than she is about possibly going to jail or hurting Rafe by sleeping with EJ.

I have to admit, having Carrie back on the show is giving some nuance to my generally black and white Sami hatin’. There is plenty to be annoyed about from both of them. Maybe I’ll shift my weight to being annoyed by Lexie and Jennifer, who have both made very little sense lately. Call it a compromise.

The Slap! aka Abby’s Admission

Like OMG FriDAYS was quite the episode. Sami got called out by Kate AND Rafe. We found out both Will’s grandmothers know he’s gay. We learned more about the Stefano kidnapping. AND ABBY CONFESSED EVERYTHING. Conveniently, as she was talking to Austin, her parents walked up and heard her say they slept together.

So... you mean slept together as in slumber party, right?

Then, conveniently, as Abby finally steps to Austin defense when he is being called out by her parents and admits what she did, Carrie walks up and is none too pleased:

Nobody lies to my man but me!

As Abby tearfully apologizes for her big lie, and asks how she can make it better, Carrie does the one thing that will make her feel better:

Though Carrie probably shouldn’t throw slaps in glass houses, she has every right to be pissed at Abby for everything she did. I was kind of shocked that Abby pulled such a 180 and took full responsibility, even begging Carrie to realize what a “great guy” Austin is. Side note: constantly calling someone a “great guy” does not bode well for your maturity or readiness to be in a relationship with an adult.

Also, what a no good very bad day for Jennifer. Getting publicly arrested, going to jail, and then finding out your daughter went psycho while you were trying to get Abe elected. And do we think Jackiffer is going to realize that Abby was obviously going through serious daddy issues. Just sayin.

Update: according to Christie Clark’s facebook, that slap was real! It looked it.

Abby be crazy!

So much has been happening on DOOL lately I can barely keep my head screwed on right. I can’t remember the last time there were this many story lines that had me genuinely interested. And none of them are more compelling/hilarious/unpredictable than the Abby Austin fake sex story line.

Where to begin? First, do we think Abby is regular crazy or crazy like a fox? Like any good liar, she seems to have genuinely convinced herself that she and Austin slept together. She doesn’t appear to have any shame or regrets about the lie.

When Carrie walked in and found Abby and Austin… cuddling? she wasn’t exactly thrilled.

Melanie finally drug Abby out of the room so that Austin could explain everything to Carrie. But he didn’t explain everything, did he? He could have said that when he found Carrie with Rafe, he drank too much and ended up kissing Abby. He could have even said that Abby says they slept together, but he doesn’t remember. But he didn’t say these things. He chose to only confess part.

Then of course Abby blurted out that they had sex, and any chance Austin had of convincing his wife that he didn’t do anything terrible was greatly diminished. Carrie has been down this road before. She has been manipulated by crazy teenagers a few times, and I don’t think Abby has exactly taken that into account. Of course, the good news is that Carrie already had feelings she was fighting with Rafe, so now she has the excuse to get out of her marriage unscathed.

I also love Melanie running interference. She has been long enough in the dark side to know what to look for, and to know it won’t end well for Abby. Her relationship with her besty is a little rocky since the whole swapping Chad thing, but Melanie wasn’t afraid to tell Abby to her face to… be less crazy?

So what now? We let the craziness unfold, of course. What I can’t stop thinking is that there was a time where everything would be revolving around this story line, with only minor blips going on elsewhere. Instead, with Days 2.0, there are a TON of major story lines (corporate espionage, Jope in Alamania, Will coming out, Sami & EJ, EJ as mayor….). I am loving it. There have been bombshells every day, and I have never been happier to be a Days fan. Even if I don’t love all the story lines (do they really need to throw Billie between Bo & Hope when they just got back together?), I love that there is so much going on!
